Skincare for summers!

Summer is here. You may have gladly replaced those sweaters with tank tops and boots with strappy sandals, here’s another thing you must change : your attitude towards your skincare!

Delhi summers, synonymous with scorching sun, sweat and sundaes, are also known to adversely affect your skin. Skin problems are galore in summer. Tanning increases, dehydration occurs, acne and bacterial infections are out in full glory! Hence it’s extremely vital to know how to take care of your skin. This involves modifications in your diet, your beauty products as well as a very conscious effort to safeguard your skin against the atrocities of the sun. Read on to find out the various ways to do so! ?

I. The entire exposed skin

This includes your arms, legs, neck, as well as your face. This section will cover how to protect the visible part of your body when you step out in the sun.

Sunscreen: I can’t stress enough on how important a sunscreen is. Go for a sunblock with at least an SPF of 30 and above. Apply a good, generous layer of sunscreen on the visible parts of your body at least 20 mins before stepping out. No matter what the brand says, you MUST re-apply the sunscreen every 4-5 hours. While different skin types require different products, if you’re looking for a standard product that does it’s job at a decent prize and is mighty reliable, go for this one from Lotus!

Exfoliation: It is the process of removing accumulation of dead cells from the outermost layer of your skin. In summers, as more dirt and sweat come into play, there’s a greater need of exfoliation. A lot of scrubs/packs can be used to do this. This helps in removing the tan off your skin as the dead cells layer goes, revealing the fresh skin underneath.

There are easy to make homemade scrubs for this purpose. The simplest and most reliable one being yoghurt, turmeric and honey. Turmeric is easily available everywhere and is the best known anti bacterial agent. Yogurt is widely known to remove tan and restore your original complexion whereas honey moisturizes the skin. Take the 3 ingredients to make a thick paste, apply all over the body, rest for 10 mins. Then using your palm, massage onto it gently and rinse with cold water. You’re sure to get startling results.

If you, like me, are lazy and don’t have the time to make a scrub, buy one! I swear by this neem tulsi body scrub from Fabindia!

IT IS A MUST to moisturize your skin after exfoliation, to keep it soft and supple. I personally love and recommend the Nivea whitening body lotion. For face, you can use a moisturizer that suits your skin type. Go for a creamy one if you have dry skin, while gel-based works best for oily skin.

Pro-tip: makeup lasts longer on exfoliated skin ?

Eat and drink right: Perhaps the most important and underrated out of all three; is to make sure you keep your body hydrated. Have at least 10 glasses of water every day to give your skin the inner glow. Let mother nature work it’s wonders in your body by it’s elixir, water! Moreover, befriend the super delicious and watery summer fruits like watermelons and mangoes to give your body that lovely glow!

II. For specific parts of the face

Ladies, we’re all always in a pursuit of beautifying our face. But in summers, it’s important to maintain your skin. Here are some tips to take care of the most vulnerable part of your body, your face:

Lips: Lips are perhaps the most delicate organs on your face, but summer can be cruel to them. It is essential to keep your lips hydrated (who likes chapped lips?) And hence go for lip balms with an SPF of 15 and above. A good chapstick is absolutely essential to keep your lips pout ready and moisturized. Go for this SPF lip balm from Avene for complete care.n_3282779228619

Hair: I’m sure all of you hate frizzy hair as much as I do. This weather makes sure the excess sweat causes unwanted frizzy and dry locks! Ladies, it’s time you give your hair the care they deserve. While we’re all familiar with the oiling-and-shampoo routine, here’s something you NEED to try : dry shampoos. These are the latest craze right now and for obvious reasons! Dry Shampoo does a smooth job of absorbing excess grease & grime and revamps your hair in seconds. It’s the perfect last minute fix for those frizzy and dry locks.

Miscellaneous: here are some overall tips for your face
i. Swear by makeup removers. Since these days there’s so much sweat in play, it’s even more vital to use a good makeup remover to get rid of that disgusting heap of sweat, dirt and that product you dabbed onto your face. I use and recommend the Maybelline clean express remover.

ii. Try using cucumber on your eyes to keep them healthy. Cucumber is absolutely cooling and cools and cleans your eyes . Ice cubes also do the same job.

iii. Avoid stepping out between 12 pm to 4 pm. Now this is the time when the sun is harshest on our latitude, hence we are at 5× more risk of sun damaging by the UV rays.

Hope some of these tips help you combat summers! Add some of your own in the comments below.

Lots of love,

Saloni?

I’m a 19 year old girl, hailing from the capital city of India, who loves to write, read, dance, talk till it gets annoying, sing and probably every thing under the sun! Being a Delhi University student isn’t the only Delhi thing about me though. Absolute dilliwaali in all the quirks, spontaneous at heart, chirpy in zeal, I’m fond of collecting earrings, and hogging on all things edible! Shopping is remedial , and I enjoy high end and street-side deals both!
