How to clean your face properly: 5 Basic skincare rules

Hello everyone!

Now who doesn’t like a clear glowing skin? But to achieve this great prize, we need to work hard and start at the very basic – a clean face! Due to exposure to pollution, secretion of sebum and oils; our skin becomes susceptible to dust.
We have all heard about the three step process – cleansing, toning and moisturizing, but that is not enough. Hence, the 5 steps – cleansing, toning, exfoliating, moisturizing and protecting it from sun 🙂 I will take you through the process in detail but to begin with, it’s important to know your skin type. Most of the skin problem arises because we do not know our own skin. Just because you have acne-prone skin, it does not mean it’s oily. Once you know what type of skin you have, it will be easier to use products suitable for it.

Step 1: Cleansing
Well this step is self-explanatory. But it is not as simple as you think. To have a clean smooth face, it’s important to do it properly. If you have dry skin, use cream-based cleansers while for oily skin go for gel-based or foam cleansers. You can also opt for oil cleansing method (details of this method require a complete dedicated post). First, wash your hands. Next wet your face with lukewarm water. This will help opening pores and enable the cleanser to reach deep down to pores and get rid of dirt and germs.

Step 2: Toning
Toners help balancing the PH level of your skin. Besides this, they remove the cleanser or makeup residue. They also prepare the skin to absorb moisturizer. However, make sure that your toner is alchol-free coz otherwise it will do more harm than benefit. You can also opt for natural toners such as rose water!

Step 3: Exfoliate
This is one step that I am guilty of not following regularly. Irrespective of what kind of skin you have; oily, dry or combination, you need to exfoliate. It helps to remove all the dead skin cells and make it look fresh. Excess dead skin cells blocks pores and hence, are one of the major reason for acne, pimples and blackheads. Want clear fresh skin? Exfoliation is the answer. It is essential to exfoliate at least once a week but I would not recommend doing it more than three times.

Step 4: Moisturize
This is the most important step that will keep your skin hydrated through the day. You can opt for serums, emulsions or creams depending upon your choice. You can also use multiple of these, for instance, serums and creams/emulsions. Serums are more targeted problem solver and they go deeper into your skin. Also try and include

Step 5: Sun protection
Without this crucial step, the whole skincare routine goes for a toss! Whatever you have done so far will be wasted if you do not protect your skin with sun block. Use a one with at least an SPF of 30. If you feel lazy to do this step, I recommend buying a moisturizer with an SPF.

So that’s the five step skin care routine that I follow. It does not matter which products you use (suitable to your skin type) drugstore or high end; if you do these steps religiously you will not be disappointed 

Do let me know what skin care routine you follow. Also if I have skipped anything that you feel is important, do add your suggestions in comments below!

As always, thanks a lot for reading 

Thanks a lot…Its great to hear that 🙂 Hope you reap benefits!

  • It is very important to watch what you are applying to follow these steps. Salt, sugar, apricot, baking soda granules are very harsh for face scrub. Nice tips though 🙂

True…especially if you are trying to make scrub yourself! in such doubt, one can go for products available from trustworthy brands targeting a particular skin type.

  • I usually skip moisturizing and sunscreen 🙁

I cannot stress more upon importance of sunscreen. But you can use a moisturizer with SPF if feeling lazy 🙂
